POSTER "How Personality Influences Users' Needs for Recommendation Diversity? "

Interesting papers and poster about the Personality Based Recommender Systems Arena.

Using Personality to Adjust Diversity in Recommender Systems
POSTER
How Personality Influences Users' Needs for Recommendation Diversity?

Remember: Personality Based Recommender Systems are like compatibility matching engines.
Which is the RIGHT approach to innovate in the Personality Based Recommender Systems Arena?
The same approach to innovate in the Online Dating Industry == 16PF5 test or similar to assess personality traits and a new method to calculate similarity between quantized patterns.

-----------------------------------------------------
WorldWide, there are over 5,000 (five thousand) online dating sites they can be classified as:
1.0: "Browsing/Searching Options, Powerful Searching Engines"  "You can fastly search for the person you want, but most probably that person does not exist or does not want to meet you because you are not compatible with him/her."
1.5: "Unidirectional Recommendation Engines"
2.0: "Matching based on Self-Reported Data / Bidirectional Recommendation Engines"
3.0: "Compatibility Matching Algorithms"
Compatibility is all about a high level on personality* similarity* between prospective mates for long term mating with commitment.
*personality measured with a normative test.
*similarity: there are different ways to calculate similarity, it depends on how mathematically is defined.
STRICT PERSONALITY SIMILARITY and not "meet other people with similar interests"

The 3 milestone discoveries of the 2001 - 2010 decade for Theories of Romantic Relationships Development are:

I) Several studies showing contraceptive pills users make different mate choices, on average, compared to non-users. "Only short-term but not long-term partner preferences tend to vary with the menstrual cycle
II) People often report partner preferences that are not compatible with their choices in real life. (Behavioural recommender systems or other system that learns your preferences are useless)
III) What is important in attracting people to one another may not be important in making couples happy. Compatibility is all about a high level on personality similarity between prospective mates for long term mating with commitment.
Also there is a similarity trilogy between genetic, mate choice and personality based recommender systems.
Personality Based Recommender Systems are the next generation of recommender systems because they perform FAR better than Behavioural ones (past actions and pattern of personal preferences)
That is the only way to improve recommender systems, to include the personality traits of their users. They need to calculate personality similarity between users but  there are different formulas to calculate similarity.
In case you did not notice, recommender systems are morphing to .......... compatibility matching engines, as the same used in the Online Dating Industry since years, with low success rates!!! because they mostly use the Big5 to assess personality and the Pearson correlation coefficient to calculate similarity.
Please remember: Personality traits are highly stable in persons over 25 years old to 45 years old.

In compatibility matching methods there are 2 steps:
1) to objectively measure personality traits or other human variables (with the 16PF5 test) without distortion.
2) to calculate compatibility between prospective mates

IPSATIVE personality tests are OBSOLETE (self-descriptive questionnaires) and should be discarded: MBTI (PerfectMatch), DISC (ThomasKnowsPeople), Enneagram (Dopasowani) or other proprietary ipsative tests like the ones used at Chemistry, ButterfliesAgain, Doskonalapara, PembePanjur, LittleHint, oneGoodLove and others.

NORMATIVE personality tests like Big5 versions used at PlentyOfFish, eHarmony , Meetic Affinity, Parship, Be2, True are good for guidance (orientation) purposes but not good enough for predictive purposes.
"Because the Big Five groups the more specific primary-level factors, feedback organized around the five Global Factor scales is more easily understood. For detailed feedback or predictive purposes, one should assess the more specific primary factors. Research has shown that more specific factors like the primary scales of the 16PF Questionnaire predict actual behavior better than the Big 5 Global Factors. For example, one extravert (a bold, fearless, high-energy type) may differ considerably from another (a sweet, warm, sensitive type), depending on the extraversion-related primary scale score patterns, so deeper analysis is typically warranted." Extracted from the 16PF5 Manual
Normative tests can not simply be translated, because you need the norm for that test, and that norm is actualized each and every time Census Figures are released
The 16PF5 test is available in
- English for the United States and the Norm for the United States (sample of individuals with the same demographic characteristics of the United States).
- English for Canada and the Norm for Canada (sample of individuals with the same demographic characteristics of Canada)
- English for the United Kingdom and the Norm for the United Kingdom (sample of individuals with the same demographic characteristics of the United Kingdom).
- English for Australia and the Norm for Australia (sample of individuals with the same demographic characteristics of Australia).
- French for France and the Norm for France.
- German for Germany and the Norm for Germany.
- Spanish for Spain and the Norm for Spain.
- Italian for Italy and the Norm for Italy.
and many more "With over 60 years of research and application behind it, the 16PF5 has become internationally well known and respected, with over 20 different translated versions."

The output of the 16PF5 test are 16 variables STens (Standard Tens) taking integer values from 1 to 10. STens divide the score scale into ten units.
STens have the advantage that they enable results to be thought of in terms of bands of scores, rather than absolute raw scores. These bands are narrow enough to distinguish statistically significant differences between candidates, but wide enough not to over emphasize minor differences between candidates.

WorldWide, there are over 5,000 -five thousand- online dating sites
but no one is using the 16PF5 (or similar) to assess personality of its members!
but no one calculates similarity with a quantized pattern comparison method!
but no one can show Compatibility Distribution Curves to each and every of its members!
but no one is scientifically proven! The only way to revolutionize the Online Dating Industry is using the 16PF5 normative personality test, available in different languages to assess personality of members, or a proprietary test with exactly the same traits of the 16PF5 and expressing compatibility with eight decimals (needs a quantized pattern comparison method, part of pattern recognition by cross-correlation, to calculate similarity between prospective mates.)
High precision in matching algorithms is precisely the key to open the door and leave the infancy of compatibility testing.
It is all about achieving the eighth decimal!
With 8 decimals, you have more precision than any person could achieve by searching on one's own, but the only way to achieve the eighth decimal is using analysis and correlation with quantized patterns.
Without offering the NORMATIVE16PF5 (or similar test measuring exactly the 16 personality factors) for serious dating, it will be impossible to innovate and revolutionize the Online Dating Industry All other proposals are NOISE and perform as placebo.

What comes after Social Networking?
My bet: The Next Big Investment Opportunity on the Internet will be …. Personalization!
Personality Based Recommender Systems and Strict Personality Based Compatibility Matching Engines for serious Online Dating with the normative 16PF5 personality test. The market remains enormous!!

2013 Latin America Digital Future in Focus Report by comScore

The study provides a comprehensive overview of the Latin American market and identifies the prevailing trends in web usage, online video, mobile and online advertising.

Key insights from the 2013 Latin America Digital Future in Focus report include:
- Of the five global regions, Latin America had the fastest growing internet population, increasing 12 percent in the past year to more than 147 million unique visitors in March 2013. (Source: comScore Media Metrix)
- Consumers in Latin America spent 10 hours online per month on Social Networking sites, doubling the global average time spent; 5 of the top 10 most engaged markets with social content worldwide are located in Latin America. (Source: comScore Media Metrix)
- Fueled by the holiday shopping season, Online Retail continues to grow in Latin America with the total number of online shoppers up 16 percent in the past year. Wal-Mart was the fastest gaining property of the top 10 most-visited Retail websites, growing 163 percent in the past year to 11.7 million visitors in March 2013. (Source: comScore Media Metrix)
- Mobile phones and tablets continue to account for a growing amount of digital traffic. Of the 4 Latin American markets analyzed, Mexico led the region with 13.9 percent of all web-based page views consumed beyond the personal computer, mostly on smartphones and tablets. (Source: comScore Device Essentials – Mexico, Argentina, Brazil & Chile)
- Online Advertising is on the rise in Brazil, growing 97 percent the past year to 130 billion display ad impressions delivered in March 2013.  Netflix, Inc. was the largest display advertiser in Brazil and Mexico with 2.7 billion and 463 million ad impressions delivered during the month, respectively. (Source: comScore Ad Metrix)
- Internet users in Argentina are the most likely in Latin America to view online video content, with more than 95 percent of its internet population doing so in March 2013. (Source: comScore Video Metrix)

"Latin American countries digital future 2012! "
"comScore's reports. Argentina is 1st in social nets. "
Please remember:  mobile concept evolving, meaning tablets with Wi-Fi Network access
( Winter 2013 will begin soon in South America: Argentina, Brazil, Chile and others. Summer 2013 ended last March 20th)

The Simpsons, Apple, Facebook, LinkedIn, WordPress, Google, Hotmail, Yahoo, YouTube, Blogger, Wikipedia, Bing, Twitter, Skype are BIG successes in Argentina!!!
I have the theory that if something is successful in Argentina, it could be a success in the World.
If it can NOT be a success here in Argentina, it will definitely NOT be a success in the World.

NO online dating company (for serious daters) has success here in Argentina nor Brazil or other Latin American country.

a model for University entrepreneurs

VatorNews had published tha article "Stanford BASES - a model for University entrepreneurs
BASES lets students get hands-on experience knowing what it means to be an Entrepreneur"

Many, if not all, of those Entrepreneurship contests/programs are really useless at all!
New and fresh research had shown prospective entrepreneurs have a defined personality.
It is all about measuring personality traits to know if a person is or not a prospective entrepreneur.

See as sample these papers:
- The Entrepreneur's General Personality Traits and Technological Developments
- Which Big-Five personality traits drive entrepreneurial failure in highly innovative industries?
- ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND THE BIG FIVE PERSONALITY TRAITS: A BEHAVIORAL GENETICS PERSPECTIVE
- Entrepreneurial tendencies of aspiring human resources in India: a multivariate analysis
- Creativity among entrepreneurship students: comparing engineering and business education

Moreover prospective entrepreneurs score different from prospective managers / businessmen / businesswomen.
Prospective entrepreneurs mostly score VERY LOW in some specific variables I and M and VERY HIGH in E, Q1 and Q2, like this 16PF5 personality pattern
A:5.B:8.C:7.E:10.F:3.G:8.H:8.I:2.L:7.M:2.N:5.O:5.Q1:10.Q2:9.Q3:5.Q4:4"

As for innovations and disruptive technologies, the Next Big Investment Opportunity on the Internet will be …. Personalization!

Zoosk in the range of USD40M Q1 2013 ???

Zoosk in the range of revenue USD40M Q1 2013 ??? And earnings ? Because as it seems Zoosk is mostly a dating application at Facebook, its expenditures could be higher than revenues? I will investigate further.

"Company Origin: Zoosk co-founders met in Iran as students at Sharif University of Technology in Tehran in the 1990s."

I thought they were half dead, because its press releases page is freezed since 2011. Zoosk was hacked this March 2013

a bunch of complaints about "POF email" ???

It seems there is a bunch of complaints about the "POF email".

A 52 page report from ComScore, from 2010 shows PlentyofFish (POF) is for casual dating (short term relationships).

Revenue of IAC Personals (Match, Chemistry, OKCupid, Meetic, ParPerfeito, MeeticAffinity, SinglesNet, People's Media Communities, DateHookUp and others) is in the range of USD750 million per year.
Revenue of eHarmony' sites (USA, Canada, Australia, UK and Brazil) is in the range of USD250 million per year.
Annual revenue of IAC Personals + Revenue of eHarmony' sites == USD1,000 Million == USD1B
Annual revenue of PlentyOfFish Media's sites (PlentyOfFish, eVow and several dating sites powered by a white label dating company) is in the range of USD40 million.
USD40million / USD1,000 Million == 4% of market (in revenue).
PlentyOfFish has the traffic but others receive the money.

Free/freemium online dating sites like PlentyOfFish and OKCupid are only marketing tools useful to send prospective customers to paid online dating sites like Chemistry and eHarmony.
When free users got tired of free sites, they migrate to a paid one.

If the owners of PlentyOfFish can not innovate in the Online Dating Industry, the best strategy for them is to sell PlentyOfFish.

PAPER: "Telling facial metrics: facial width is associated with testosterone levels in men"

PAPER: "Telling facial metrics: facial width is associated with testosterone levels in men"

"High facial width-to-height ratio (fWHR) has been associated with a cluster of behavioural traits in men, including aggression and status-striving. This association between face structure and behaviour may be caused by testosterone. Here we investigated the relationship of both baseline and reactive testosterone levels to fWHR. In addition, we investigated the link between testosterone and three well-characterised sexually dimorphic facial metrics. Testosterone was measured in one sample of males (n = 185) before and after a speed-dating event. An additional sample provided only baseline testosterone measures (n = 92). fWHR was positively associated with testosterone reactions to potential mate exposure and marginally associated with baseline testosterone in Sample 1. We found a positive association with baseline testosterone and fWHR in Sample 2. In addition, face-width-to-lower-height ratio was positively associated with testosterone in both samples, suggesting that, in particular, facial width (scaled by two measures of facial height) is associated with testosterone. Importantly, our results also indicate that there is no association between adult testosterone and the sexual dimorphism of face shape. Thus, while our findings question the status of sexual dimorphism as a proxy measure of testosterone, they do provide evidence that testosterone is linked to fWHR and might underlie the relationship between fWHR and behaviour."

INTERESTING information from IAC

In a recent post I had written about CONFIDENTIAL information from the European Meetic - Group (Mostly owned by IAC - InterActive Corporation / nasdaq:IACI)

Now I post a IAC document which shows its International Operations (page 26 pdf / page 17 document) are small in comparison with what they should be.
The IAC Personals had a good Q1 thanks to previous acquisitions of dating sites and lowering new customers' high acquisitions costs, but I will wait and see Q2 2013.
Its Latin American operations are estimated to be coins!

Paid online dating sites have high acquisition costs, they can not abandon the attracting, converting and retaining marketing stages; the automatic renewal of their members's subscriptions with dirty credit-card billing trickery.

ChristianCafe GAME OVER soon ???

The majority of online dating sites never show you prices before you register.
ChristianCafe, a 15 years old company in the Online Dating Industry, seems to be the only one who informs you prices before you create a profile there.

It seems traffic is dropping fast. Just seen the owner trying to sell a bunch of useless domain names.

A new plague: online dating startups!!!

In previous posts I had written about:

A new plague: compatibility matching engines.
More PLAGUE of rubbish recommender systems 2012.

Dave Evans from Online Dating Insider had alerted me about a new plague: online dating startups!!! There are 290 online dating startups listed at AngelList; sort them by date and check 150 of 290 were registered after April 2012!!!

The entire Online Dating Industry for serious daters in 1st World Countries is a HOAX, performing as a Big Online Casino, with a low effectiveness/efficiency level of their matching algorithms (less than 10%).

Actual online dating sites offering compatibility matching methods, when calculating compatibility between prospective mates, have less or at least the same precision as searching on one's own. [in the range of 3 or 4 persons compatible per 1,000 persons screened]
* That is because they use:
a) simplified versions of personality traits, instead of the 16PF5 or similar with the complete inventory (16 variables)
b) inadequate quantitative methods to calculate compatibility between prospective mates, like eHarmony which uses Dyadic Adjustment Scale or other sites which use multivariate linear / logistic regression equations o other equations.

The 3 milestone discoveries of the 2001 - 2010 decade for Theories of Romantic Relationships Development are:
I) Several studies showing contraceptive pills users make different mate choices, on average, compared to non-users. "Only short-term but not long-term partner preferences tend to vary with the menstrual cycle"

Behavioural Matching Algorithms are all rubbish.

Without offering the NORMATIVE16PF5 (or similar test measuring exactly the 16 personality factors) for serious dating, it will be impossible to innovate and revolutionize the Online Dating Industry.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Tunguska event was an enormously powerful explosion that occurred in what is now Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, at about 0:14 UT on June 30 1908. The explosion is believed to have been caused by the air burst of a large meteoroid or comet fragment at an altitude of 5–10 kilometres (3–6 mi) above the Earth's surface.
The energy of the blast was nearly 15 megatons of TNT roughly equal to the United States' Castle Bravo thermonuclear bomb tested on March 1, 1954; about 1,000 times more powerful than the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan (codenamed  Little Boy).

The idea of a thermonuclear fusion bomb ignited by a smaller fission bomb was first proposed by Enrico Fermi to his colleague Edward Teller in 1941 at the start of what would become the Manhattan Project.
Other prominent scientists openly recommended building nuclear bombs more powerful than the standard pure-fission model. Their assumption was that critical mass considerations would limit the potential size of fission explosions, but that a fusion explosion could be as large as its supply of fuel, which has no critical mass limit.
In January 1951, Edward Teller and Stanislaw Ulam invented radiation-powered ablation-drive implosion.
The Teller–Ulam design is the nuclear weapon design concept used in most of the world's multi-megaton-range thermonuclear weapons;  a 1,000 times more powerful than Hiroshima's Little Boy. In most applications the bulk of its destructive energy comes from uranium fission, not hydrogen/deuterium/tritium fusion
Its essential features, which officially remained secret for nearly three decades, are:
1) separation of stages into a triggering "primary" explosive and a much more powerful "secondary" explosive
2) compression of the secondary by X-rays coming from nuclear fission in the primary, a process called the "radiation implosion" of the secondary,
3) heating of the secondary, after cold compression, by a second fission explosion inside the secondary.

The Online Dating Industry needs a very powerful algorithm like the "Teller Ulam design". In this case 100 times more powerful than actual matching algorithms.

Breaking "the online dating sound barrier" is to achieve at least:
3 most compatible persons in a 100,000 persons database.
12 most compatible persons in a 1,000,000 persons database.
48 most compatible persons in a 10,000,000 persons database.
100 times better than Compatibility Matching Algorithms used by actual online dating sites!

The only way to achieve that is:
- using the 16PF5 normative personality test, available in different languages to assess personality of members, or a proprietary test with exactly the same traits of the 16PF5. The ensemble of the 16PF5 is: 10E16, big number as All World Population is nearly 7.0 * 10E9
- expressing compatibility with eight decimals, like The pattern 6.7.6.8.9.6.7.7.8.7.2.5.8.7.3.4 is 92.55033557%  +/- 0.00000001% similar to the pattern 7.7.6.8.8.7.6.5.8.7.4.5.7.7.3.4
Using a quantized pattern comparison method (part of pattern recognition by cross-correlation) to calculate similarity between prospective mates.

That is the only way to revolutionize the Online Dating Industry.

All other proposals are .............. NOISE and perform as placebo.

PAPER: ""The Impact of Internet Diffusion on Marriage Rates ..."

"The Impact of Internet Diffusion on Marriage Rates: Evidence from the Broadband Market" says "This work complements related research by Hitsch et al. (2010), which relies on data from an online dating service to infer revealed mate preferences. One key finding is that the match outcomes in the online dating market appear to be approximately efficient in the sense that they are the outcomes that would arise in an environment with no search frictions." at page 7 and "Hence, it is important to emphasize that, even though dating through organized matchmaking websites seems to be an easy and to efficient way of meeting people (Hitsch et al. (2010)), individuals appear to be using online resources in a much broader way when looking for a partner." at page 32.

unfortunately
Hitsch, Gunter J., Ali Hortaçsu, and Dan Ariely (2010): "Matching and Sorting in Online Dating," American Economic Review, Vol. 100(1), pp. 130-163.
is a flawed paper.

The entire Online Dating Industry for serious daters in 1st World Countries is a HOAX, performing as a Big Online Casino, with a low effectiveness/efficiency level of their matching algorithms (less than 10%), in the same range as searching by your own.
Innovations are not adding more bells and whistles to actual online dating sites.
The Online Dating Industry is waiting for the innovative compatibility matching method which can kill the Matchmaking Industry and other Offline Dating Proposals. The innovations the
Online Dating Industry needs, will definitively come from the new discoveries on Theories of Romantic Relationships Development.

I) Several studies showing contraceptive pills users make different mate choices, on average, compared to non-users. "Only short-term but not long-term partner preferences tend to vary with the menstrual cycle"
II) People often report partner preferences that are not compatible with their choices in real life. (Behavioural recommender systems or other system that learns your preferences are useless)

PAPER "Promises and Lies: An Experiment on Detecting Deception"

Promises and Lies: An Experiment on Detecting Deception

Abstract: Although economic and social relationships can involve deception, such relationships are often governed by informal contracts that require trust. While important advances have been made concerning deception in economics, the research has focused little on written forms of communication. Are there certain systematic cues that signal written communications as dishonest? Are those signals accurately detected and used by message receivers? We fill this gap by studying messages written in a novel three-person trust game (we call it the Mistress Game). We find that: (i) messages that use encompassing terms, or a greater number of words, are significantly more likely to be viewed as promises; and (ii) promises that mention money are significantly more likely to be trusted. Notwithstanding the latter finding, we find senders who mention money within their promises to be significantly less likely to keep their word than those who do not.

No more UltraMatch at POF ?

The "newest and most advanced Behavioural Matchmaking System" GAME OVER ? (discontinued due to high resources consumption and nearly nobody had paid for that feature.)

Dave Evans from Online Dating Insider had posted about "IAC Finished With US Dating Site Acquisitions". (PlentyOfFish Media is from Canada but operates mainly in USA.)

I thought the IAC had planned to buy or destroy PlentyOfFish after a 2 years long negotiations.

Behavioural Matching Algorithms are all rubbish.

Synapse: the Match algorithm

Dave Evans from Online Dating Insider complains about Synapse: the Match algorithm.

"Codenamed "Synapse", the Match algorithm uses a variety of factors to suggest possible mates. While taking into account a user's stated preferences, such as desired age range, hair colour and body type, it also learns from their actions on the site. So, if a woman says she doesn't want to date anyone older than 26, but often looks at profiles of thirty-somethings, Match will know she is in fact open to meeting older men. Synapse also uses "triangulation". That is, the algorithm looks at the behaviour of similar users and factors in that information, too."

PlentyOfFish's algorithm also performs as a behavioral recommendation engine based on past actions and it is full rubbish.

It is really funny how those "important persons / math geniuses" from big Online Dating Sites can waste precious time with Behavioural Recommender Systems, improving them, "refining" those Behavioural Matching Algorithms, which are all rubbish.

No innovations since years for the Online Dating Industry.

III) What is important in attracting people to one another may not be important in making couples happy. Compatibility is all about a high level on personality similarity between prospective mates for long term mating with commitment.

Personality Based Recommender Systems are the next generation of recommender systems because they perform far better than Behavioural ones (past actions and pattern of personal preferences)
