one of the biggest conspiracies ever executed on the Internet

Florida mom’s photos used in bogus Match profiles
“Not a day goes by when someone doesn’t tell me that they saw my pictures posted on Match or another web site,” says Yuliana Avalos, a Florida mom and part-time model who never actually signed up for the site.
The popular dating site is engaging in “one of the biggest conspiracies ever executed on the Internet,” the class-action Manhattan Federal Court suit says.
“Thousands” of others, including celebrities, soldiers and adult actresses, have had their pictures plucked from Facebook and other sites and used for bogus profiles as well – even though they ’’are not and never were” members of Match’s dating sites, the suit says.
Inflating the number of profiles on Match and its other 25 dating sites is good for their business.
The suit also says the company could easily crack down on the numerous bogus profiles by using facial recognition software, but chooses not to.

Main prediction 2014 for the Online Dating Industry

Legislation.

Online dating sites will be forced to show how many active members they have, like the Parship lawsuit.
During 2008, a lawsuit against Parship in Belgium about "pratiques commerciales trompeuses" forced Parship to disclose how many paid members it had in Belgium (Parship lied about their customers; 80.000 announced, 5.004 in reality, a 6.25% conversion rate, the same to say over 93% inactive profiles!!! )
When I was interviewed last January 2011 by "Caras y Caretas" (summer in Argentina) I thought there were going to be a big scandal, because former CEO of Match LATAM Countries recognized 75% inactive profiles at Match Argentina, but nothing happened until August 2011 when a U.S. Class Action Called Match a 'Scam' / More than 90% of potential dates are "phantoms," suit charged then Match had morphed its marketing campaign.

eHarmony Plus (eH+)

eHarmony Plus (eH+) was featured in the film "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty"

"Subscribing to eH+ will not allow you to obtain more matches than what would generate during the course of your subscription to the eHarmony Services, but will add a special human touch to the matches generated by the Compatibility Matching System that you will receive under the basic service, and that human touch may result in a different priority ranking in selection and delivery of your matches. Because that human touch is costly and involves personal attention and special judgment, eHarmony charges a premium for eH+. " translation: eHarmony's matching algorithm performs as placebo, its success rate in the range of 10% only.

eHarmony is a 13+ years old obsolete site and a HOAX, based on a big scientific fraud.
eHarmony is not "scientifically proven" because eHarmony Labs had never proven eHarmony's matching algorithm can match prospective partners who will have more stable and satisfying relationships -and very low divorce rates- than couples matched by chance, astrological destiny, personal preferences, searching on one's own, or other technique as the control group in a peer reviewed Scientific Paper for the majority (over 90%) of eHarmony's members.

eHarmony is a 13+ years old obsolete site using Big Five traits to measure personality of its members, and Big Five normative personality test is only good for informative/guidance purposes but not good enough for predictive purposes. Many Psychologists began to use the HEXACO model of personality during 2013 to replace the Big Five test, but I suggest to use the 16PF5 test.
Worldwide there are over 5,000 online dating sites, no one uses the 16PF5, no one is scientifically proven yet, and no one can show you compatibility distribution curves, i.e. if you are a man seeking women, to show how compatible you are with a 20,000,000 women database, and to select a bunch of 100 women from 20,000,000 women database.

eHarmony's algorithm is in the range of showing you 3 most compatible persons per 1,000 persons screened, and with the 16PF5 you can reach 3 most compatible persons per 100,000 persons screened; a 100 times more powerful algorithm (NOT 100% improvement, a 100 X improvement, really an innovation)

IAC Personals reorganization: Was it a coincidence or not?

Dec 18 2013 Match Faces Dispute Over User in Chicago

Dec 19 2013 IAC Reorganizes: Greg Blatt Is Chairman Of New Match Group

Was it a coincidence or not? Because the IAC did not announce during Q3 2013 they planned to reorganize.
"They do not want to innovate, they want to squeeze their big databases to get all the juice (money) from the wallets of the users. See also IAC Q3 2013 conference call full transcription."
When I was interviewed last January 2011 by "Caras y Caretas" (summer in Argentina) I thought there were going to be a big scandal, because former CEO of Match LATAM Countries recognized 75% inactive profiles at Match Argentina, but nothing happened until August 2011 when a "U.S. Class Action Called Match a 'Scam' / More than 90% of potential dates are "phantoms," suit charged then Match had morphed its marketing campaign.

My bet: Something big will happen soon in IAC Personals,
perhaps a big earthquake for the Online Dating Industry.

Stupid investor series: today, LikeBright / part 2

I had posted about LikeBright last January.

Now I had read they received more funds.
LikeBright will be a "Stupid Investors' series" case of study.

If its motto is "you'll be connected with other users who are friends with your Facebook friends" like Hinge, that approach has a 50%+ "divorce" rate.

Please remember: If man A likes playing cards and woman B also likes playing cards, that does not mean man A likes woman B, or woman B can like man A with the same intensity or interest. Compatibility is STRICT PERSONALITY SIMILARITY and not "meet other people with similar interests"

Tinder is backed by IAC, which owns Match, Chemistry, OkCupid, Meetic, Tinder, Twoo and others.
Tinder has not any revenue. It is free because Tinder and Twoo, are marketing tools to migrate free users to Match/ Meetic and make them pay there. It seems other social dating applications are decaying like Badoo, Zoosk (planning 2014 IPO), Skout, Twine, AreYouInterested, etc.
Social dating is vaporware. Online Dating for serious daters does not need to be more social, it needs to be more effective/efficient. It needs to reduce the false positives problem.
Remember failed ones? like: LikeIt / TheCompleteMe, Comiingle,  Perceptual Networks, Zingl, Engage (then rebranded to Ignighter group dating, then rebranded again to StepOut), Thread, Triangulate, Gelato (then rebranded to Twnty), WooMe, 12Like, LittleHint, SmartDate and others.

article "IAC Will Turn Match Dating Service Into a Separate Business" / part 2

Just read the article at  Bloomberg and IAC

My bet: The IAC had understood they are not going to win the “Yuliana Avalos and others against IAC (Match and others) collective lawsuit”

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/celeb-pics-fake-accounts-match-lawyer-article-1.1534885

They had opened the umbrella before it rains.
They know during 2014 a NEW Legislation for Online Dating Sites will force them to disclose how many active members they have (Premium members: paid or with gift subscriptions)
And also force them to conduct ID verification ? "A variety of new laws, or new interpretations of existing laws, could subject dating sites to claims or otherwise harm their business". (extracted from IAC SEC filing)

ALL Online Dating Industry companies operating Worldwide, are under the scrutiny of consumers and lawyers now!!!
Free/Freemium online dating sites like OKCupid and PlentyOfFish (POF) are going to be inviable if Legislation applies to them

If anyone can investigate further some IAC Personals' dating sites in decadence of users, like Match, Chemistry, Meetic and MeeticAffinity?

IAC Reorganizes, newly-created Match Group

Just read the articles:
IAC Reorganizes, Greg Blatt to become Chairman of IAC's newly-created Match Group
IAC overhauls management, creates Match Group

Surprise…. Surprise….

Fake profiles in Online Dating sites will be a hot topic for lawyers this busy season in the Online Dating Industry (20th Dec 2013 to 20th Feb 2014)

I hope Zoosk IPO will fail because .....

UPDATE
Please read:

IPO Of The Dating App Everyone IS NOT Talking About
http://onlinedatingsoundbarrier.blogspot.com.ar/2014/04/ipo-of-dating-app-everyone-is-not.html
Tinder is demolishing Zoosk.
Zoosk is NOT profitable and will never be profitable, it is only a bubble sustained by a big marketing budget. Investors had put over USD 61 Million and now want to recover that money and after that, they will put Zoosk to sleep.

Zoosk: 6 (six) long years operating at a loss: As of December 31, 2013, we had an accumulated deficit of USD 95.6 million.

More juicy info about Zoosk IPO.
http://onlinedatingsoundbarrier.blogspot.com.ar/2014/04/more-juicy-info-about-zoosk-ipo.html

Dave Evans had posted "Zoosk Cleaning Up for IPO" but the truth is "It is not cleaning up, it is bridal makeup. Several investors plan to recover their money and then put Zoosk to sleep."

I hope Zoosk IPO will fail because ..... its Management Team can not innovate in the Online Dating Industry.
They can cook a barbecue under the water, they are smoke sellers, but they are not going to innovate in nothing.
Zoosk's Scientific Matchmaking Service (ZSMS) is a HOAX.

Tinder and Twoo, are marketing tools to migrate free users to Match/ Meetic and make them pay there. Other social dating applications are decaying just now, like Badoo, Zoosk, Skout, Twine, AreYouInterested; even Hinge?

The Worldwide Online Dating Market 2014 / Spanish version / (full).

(all link to pages in English)

Ashley Madison
Cupid PLC
Global Personals (White Label Dating)
Zoosk (que planea su IPO para 2014)
Badoo
Match
Mamba

y en "From Dating to Mating and Relating: Predictors of Initial and Long-Term Outcomes of Speed-Dating in a Community Sample.

J. Ugander, B. Karrer, L. Backstrom, C. Marlow. "The Anatomy of the Facebook Social Graph" y L. Backstrom, P. Boldi, M. Rosa, J. Ugander, S. Vigna. "Four Degrees of Separation".
[What lies beneath: The linguistic traces of deception in online dating profiles 2010 / Making Sense of Strangers' Expertise from Signals in Digital Artifacts 2009 / Personality Impressions Based on Facebook Profiles 2007]

PAPER: Personality-Based Active Learning

Personality-Based Active Learning for Collaborative Filtering Recommender Systems

Abstract. Recommender systems (RSs) suffer from the cold-start or new user/item problem, i.e., the impossibility to provide a new user with accurate recommendations or to recommend new items.
Active learning (AL) addresses this problem by actively selecting items to be presented to the user in order to acquire her ratings and hence improve the output of the Recommender system.
In this paper, we propose a novel AL approach that exploits
the user's personality - using the Five Factor Model (FFM) - in order to identify the items that the user is requested to rate. We have evaluated our approach in a user study by integrating it into a mobile, context-aware RS that provides users with recommendations for places of interest (POIs).
We show that the proposed AL approach significantly increases the number of ratings acquired from the user and the recommendation accuracy.

Please notice:
Personality Based Recommender Systems are the next generation of recommender systems because they perform far better than Behavioural ones (past actions and pattern of personal preferences)
That is the only way to improve recommender systems, to include the personality traits of their users. They need to calculate personality similarity between users but there are different formulas to calculate similarity. In case you had not noticed, recommender systems are morphing to .......... compatibility matching engines, as the same used in the Online Dating Industry since years, with low success rates until now because they mostly use the Big5 to assess personality and the Pearson correlation coefficient to calculate similarity.
The BIG 5 (Big Five) normative personality test is OBSOLETE. Do not use it any more. The HEXACO (a.k.a. Big Six) is another oversimplification. Online Dating sites have very big databases, in the range of 20,000,000 (twenty million) profiles, so the BIG5 model or the HEXACO model are not enough for predictive purposes. That is why I suggest the 16PF5 test instead.

Which is the right approach to innovate in the Personality Based Recommender Systems Arena?
The same approach to innovate in the Online Dating Industry == 16PF5 or 15FQ+ test or similar to assess personality traits and a new method to calculate similarity between quantized patterns.

What comes after the Social Networking wave?
The Next Big Investment Opportunity on the Internet will be .... Personalization!
Personality Based Recommender Systems and Strict Personality Based Compatibility Matching Engines for serious Online Dating with the normative 16PF5 personality test.
The market remains enormous!!

Please remember: "similarity is actually the key to a long-lasting relationship "

- Innovations for the Online Dating Industry.
NO INNOVATIONS SINCE YEARS IN THE ONLINE DATING INDUSTRY.
C level executives are cooking barbecues under the water (selling smoke) and not paying attention to latest research from Academics which could be beneficial for the Online Dating Industry. Wasting precious time with Matchmakers which should be obsolete.

eHarmony , True, PerfectMatch, MeeticAffinity, Parship, Be2, PlentyOfFish, Chemistry and others have a low effectiveness/efficiency level of their matching algorithms.
The Online Dating Industry does not need a 10% improvement, a 50% improvement or a 100% improvement. It does need "a 100 times better improvement" , a BIG innovation.

Actual matching algorithms used by eHarmony, Chemistry, PlentyOfFish and others, even behavioural recommender systems, can not be improved, they need to be discarded NOW. Because they are in the range of 3 to 4 prospective mates as selected / recommended / compatible for dating purposes per 1,000 members screened in the database. They all 3 are performing the same for serious daters, with a high percentage of false positives, like gun machines firing flowers.
They can not break the online dating sound barrier!
You do not need to improve a piston engine when you need a jet engine to break sound barrier.

PAPER: A Study on Women Behavior with Men

Abstract
Due to its particular conditions, the Internet increases opportunities for lies and deception compared to offline interactions. In online dating, misrepresentation of the self is an issue of particular relevance. Previous studies have shown that searching for a mate online is accompanied by a high risk of being deceived. This paper focuses on the rarely-considered
perspective of the receivers of deception. Our study will first investigate deception patterns of men and women in online dating profiles. In a second step, modes of detecting deception (email, telephone, face-to-face, etc.) are analyzed. Using online survey data of 3,535 users of a German dating site, results show (1) gender-specific deception patterns: Women are more likely to misrepresent their physical attractiveness; men are more likely to misrepresent information on marital status, intended relationship, and height. (2) These gender-specific deception patterns are associated with specific detection modes. Women are more likely to detect specific male deceptions during e-mail communication in an early stage of dating, whereas men are more likely to detect specific female deceptions at the first face-to-face meeting. These results highlight the link between different kinds of deception, characteristics of the receiver and its detection via different communication technologies. Implications of the results for the mating process are discussed.

WorldWide, there are over 5,000 -five thousand- online dating sites
but no one is using the 16PF5 (or similar) to assess personality of its members!
but no one calculates similarity with a quantized pattern comparison method!
but no one can show Compatibility Distribution Curves to each and every of its members!
but no one is scientifically proven!
No actual online dating site  is "scientifically proven" because no one can prove its matching algorithm can match prospective partners who will have more stable and satisfying relationships -and very low divorce rates- than couples matched by chance, astrological destiny, personal preferences, searching on one's own, or other technique as the control group in a peer reviewed Scientific Paper for the majority (over 90%) of its members.

HINGE: data scientist used to work for the CIA

Just read an article at Business Insider about Hinge.

It says "Our new data scientist used to work for the CIA, catching bad guys," ... "And now he's working on this new algorithm. It's a new world."

I laughed!

Compatibility is STRICT PERSONALITY SIMILARITY and not "meet other people with similar interests"

As for Tinder, it is backed by IAC, which owns Match, Chemistry, OkCupid, Meetic, Tinder, Twoo and others.
Remember failed ones? like: LikeIt / TheCompleteMe, Comiingle, LikeBright, Perceptual Networks, Zingl, Engage (then rebranded to Ignighter group dating, then rebranded again to StepOut), Thread, Triangulate, Gelato (then rebranded to Twnty), WooMe, 12Like, LittleHint, SmartDate and others.
