PAPER Meeting Online: The Rise of the Internet as a Social Intermediary
(Rosenfeld and Thomas do not check any kind of personality similarity between couples)
"With the meteoric rise of the Internet as a way couples meet in the past few years, and the concomitant recent decline in the central role of friends, it is possible that in the next several years the Internet could eclipse friends as the most influential way Americans meet their romantic partners, displacing friends out of the top position for the first time since the early 1940s.
If it were the case that the Internet fundamentally increased adult access to potential romantic partners, we should expect to see an increase over the Internet era in the romantic partnership rate for adults, especially middle aged adults whose access to single others is usually constrained. The available data, however, do not reflect an increase in the partnership rate for U.S. adults since 2000."
