Alibaba (BABA) fined for price violations

For those who don't know, November 11th is what is known as "Single's Day" in China. It is supposed to serve as almost an anti-Valentine's Day, in which bachelors and bachelorettes get to celebrate being single.

Alibaba revealed that it was contacted by the Securities and Exchange Commission earlier this year after it came to light that the company had been talking to China's State Administration for Industry and Commerce regarding sales of counterfeit goods. The company failed to disclose this information on in its IPO prospectus prior to going public last year.

USA FTC Chief Technologist Ashkan Soltani On Algorithmic Transparency And The Fight Against Biased Bots

In 2012, the Wall Street Journal published the results of an exhaustive investigation into the online pricing practices of Staples Inc. As it turned out, what customers were paying for office equipment was, in part, dependent upon where they lived. An algorithm built into the Staples website, the investigation revealed, was inadvertently giving discounted prices to customers who lived closer to rival stores, or rather penalizing those who lived farther away.

 When we’re using dating sites to find matches, some programmer decided to code an algorithm -- which information to show and not show. And the fact that we’re interacting with these algorithms: One, people might not know it, and two, it’s possible for them to be biased in some way.


Ashkan Soltani, who became chief technologist of the Federal Trade Commission in October, has made algorithmic transparency one of his stated goals. The agency is hiring researchers to test for biases in automated online services.

The Online Dating Industry is selling elixirs, tonics, snake oil liniments and other patent medicine and performing like the Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Industry before the USA Food and Drug Administration was created where any player can make any claim without any credentials.
I live in a South American country and I am really astonished to see how online daters in "1st World" countries are really victims of human experimentation. No actual online dating site  is "scientifically proven" because no one can prove its matching algorithm can match prospective partners who will have more stable and satisfying relationships -and very low divorce rates- than couples matched by chance, astrological destiny, personal preferences, searching on one's own, or other technique as the control group in a peer reviewed Scientific Paper for the majority (over 90%) of its members.   

The entire Online Dating Industry for serious daters in 1st World Countries is a HOAX, performing as a Big Online Casino, with a low effectiveness/efficiency level of their matching algorithms (less than 10%). In the same range as searching by your own. It needs to reduce the false positives problem and big data dating IS NOT the key to long-lasting romance.  
Online dating sites using the Big Five model could be considered obsolete sites, because the Big Five model has been proven as "an incorrect and incomplete model of personality"
  
The key to long-lasting romance is STRICT PERSONALITY SIMILARITY, but ...
the only way to revolutionize the Online Dating Industry is using the 16PF5 normative personality test, available in different languages to assess personality of members, or a proprietary test with exactly the same traits of the 16PF5 and expressing compatibility with eight decimals (needs a quantized pattern comparison method, part of pattern recognition by cross-correlation, to calculate similarity between prospective mates.)
High precision in matching algorithms is precisely the key to open the door and leave the infancy of compatibility testing.

Unfortunately the Big Five normative personality test is obsolete, it has been proven as an incomplete and incorrect model of personality. The HEXACO (a.k.a. Big Six) is another oversimplification. 

Personality Based Recommender Systems are the next generation of recommender systems because they perform far better than Behavioural ones (past actions and pattern of personal preferences)
That is the only way to improve recommender systems, to include the personality traits of their users. They need to calculate personality similarity between users but there are different formulas to calculate similarity.

In case you did not notice, recommender systems are morphing to compatibility matching engines, as the same used in the Online Dating Industry for years, with low success rates!!! because they mostly use the Big 5 to assess personality and the Pearson correlation coefficient to calculate similarity.
Please remember: Personality traits are highly stable in persons over 25 years old to 45 years old.

Online Dating sites OFFERING COMPATIBILITY MATCHING METHODS BASED ON PERSONALITY SIMILARITY have very big databases, in the range of 20,000,000 (twenty million) profiles, so the Big Five model or the HEXACO model are not enough for predictive purposes. That is why I suggest the 16PF5 normative personality test instead.
The same applies for Personality Based Recommender Systems.
